The World’s Most Expensive Chair

An Irishwoman who spent most of her life in France, Eileen Gray was an interior designer and architect, but is best known as a pioneering furniture designer. Between the world wars she created modern designs like the E-1027 table, Bibendum Chair and Dragon Chair (top photo above). She was largely forgotten until the late 70s, and her collectability has risen dramatically since. In 2009, Yves Saint Laurent sold his Dragon Chair for an astounding $28 million, by far the record for twentieth century design. It took Gray two years to handcraft the chair, in the process creating a work of art as valuable as the most prized paintings of the era.
