Garden of the Gods

Approaching the Chateau de Villandry we were impressed, but no more so than several other equally glorious chateaux we’d seen that day. Then we saw the gardens, and felt as if we’d entered a magic kingdom, maybe another galaxy, with colors and patterns and shapes that beggar description. Here are some photos, but you truly have to see it, walk through it, breathe the air, to take it all in. The story is almost as charming as the gardens. A young Spanish medical researcher and his heiress American wife bought the run down chateau in 1906 and restored it to its Renaissance glory. They brought up their family in the chateau and their descendants keep it in pristine shape. A must-see if you find yourself in the Loire.
