Your Home’s First Course

Like the first course of a meal or the first chapter of a book, the entryway sets the tone for the rest of your home. It should give guests a clue to your style, to the language of your space, so that they move easily to the other rooms. In the photo above the owners are antique collectors and the mirror, commode and paintings give visitors a taste of their collection. The European traditional décor choices—striped paper on the wall, a Wilton runner with carpet rods on the stairs, the oriental rug and the lantern on the beamed ceiling—are all meant to prepare you for what comes next. Of course the homeowner knows what comes next, so for them the entryway is the daily reminder of the benefits of a perfectly integrated interior design. After all, you may know what’s for dessert, but you still want the appetizer to be delicious.
