Sometimes one fabric can inspire a design. So it is with this French formal living room. My client and I fell in love with the silk embroidered fabric used for the window treatments, and it sets the tone for the rest of the space. Next we settled on a large Aubusson rug that elegantly extends the blue and champagne theme. The textured fabric sofas and damask covered bergere chairs provide neutral counterpoint, while the antique brass and glass cocktail table anchors the scheme. The pair of antique gold double sconces and chandeliers are delicate examples of classic French style. Antique inkwells, English wood boxes and silver vases add just the right degree of accessorizing. Naturally, Impressionist style paintings hang over the carved stone French fireplace and on the raised panel hand painted walls.

The bottom two photos offer a wider view of the room before and after construction. My client’s prized Steinway is pictured, with the adjacent, clover shaped fringed ottoman and wood frame sofa covered in blue damask. A pair of antique French mirrors atop carved consoles create glittering reflections of the individual elements of this traditional French design.

And it all began when we discovered a silk fabric with exquisite embroidery and French blue contrasting panels. To view another project I’ve completed in the French formal style, click here.
