The final element of my client’s complete home renovation project—the pool and landscaped yard—is now ready for its first summer season. The covered porch was finished earlier, and it remains a focal point, with outdoor drapes adding an elegant accent to the porch’s formal design. Comfortable club chairs in wicker, a large ottoman and natural looking outdoor rug further define the classic look. The large rectangular pool (the husband is a serious swimmer) is bordered in stone with a French pattern.

On one side of the pool are two double padded chaise lounges; on the other single chaises as well as club chairs offer seating options at pool’s edge. Oversize Market umbrellas provide the shade. The talented landscape designer—Jan Saltiel Rafel—created a lush setting in perfect harmony with the architecture and furnishings.

From inside to outside the design works seamlessly (you can see the inside here), the European traditional style moving into the landscaped pool area with a sense of sophisticated luxury that is at once timeless and very soothing. I know, because I recently spent a summer afternoon as the beneficiary of the homeowners’ peerless hospitality. My contribution was a dessert I haven’t made for many years, Baba Au Rhum muffins (recipe here).
