Making Small Spaces Feel Larger

I’m often asked to design a small room to feel more open and inviting. In this case I started by creating built-in bookcases whose depth offers the illusion of greater space. Oversized leather armchairs also make the room appear larger. Roman shades under a projected crown molding presents an uncluttered look. The light white ceiling and wall-to-wall sisal carpeting increases the perceived height and width of the room. Above all, the unified interior design promotes openness, as in the blue ottoman and blue mohair cushions on the chairs, and the Persian area rug and patterned window treatments. The perception of size is quite malleable, and the right design choices can create an airy, open feel out of what might appear to be the most compact of spaces.
