Daydreaming at The Frick

The-Frick-Collection_V1_460x285

We were in Manhattan recently for a friend’s captivating piano recital and decided to use the occasion to revisit the Frick Collection. William Clay Frick was a hugely wealthy and controversial steel magnate. He was also one of the leading art collectors of The Gilded Age. In 1919 he built a mansion that filled the entire block on Fifth Avenue. Since 1930 it has been a museum, one of my favorites, and not only because of its art collection. It was and remains a beautifully designed space built in a style and at a cost that is almost impossible to imagine today. The room in the picture above is typical of the sumptuous quality of the design, with its parquet floor, detailed friezes, ornate crown moldings, crystal chandeliers and abundant use of gold leaf. Walking through the museum I find myself daydreaming about life in the sumptuous grandeur of Mr. Frick’s palace, in an era before the government had the gall to instigate the income tax.

Beyond Bed Bath & Beyond

SheetsTowels

When I’m in the final stages of a project, finding the right bed and bath accessories can be a difficult and time consuming process. The retail shops never seem to have the colors I need and the collections are never complete. So I’m very excited about finding a supplier with the highest quality goods. I can now order exactly what I need in sheets and towels in every size and color. It definitely makes my life easier. If you find this kind of shopping as frustrating as I do, it might make sense for you to call or come by to find out how to take advantage of what I think are super bed and bath products.

The Secret Wife of Louis XIV: Francoise d’Aubigne, Madame de Maintenon, by Veronica Buckley

Maintenon

Last month I read a fascinating book about a highborn Frenchwoman, Madame de la Tour du Pin, who weathered the French Revolution, the rise and fall of Napoleon, and much else to lead a remarkable life. I just finished a book about an equally dynamic Frenchwoman, one born at the opposite end of the social spectrum, who would climb to the peak of power. I am speaking of Madame de Maintenon, the secret wife of Louis XIV, the Sun King.  From literally a beggar in the streets of Paris, she rose to become Louis’ sole mistress and secret wife for 40 years. She was his most trusted advisor, his closest confidante. As such she grew to wield considerable power in what was the most opulent and influential court in Europe. The picture of this court, of Louis and his scheming courtiers in Versailles, of life in the 17th century in all its horror and splendor, is captured vividly in this engrossing narrative. If you love French history, especially the story of its most intriguing women, you won’t be disappointed.

Round Tables in Square Rooms

Roundtable2

When I’m faced with a square dining room, as I am at present on several projects, a round table makes a lot of sense. They fit the space perfectly, and there’s nothing better for entertaining. If you need flexibility, crescent leaves will make the table bigger. Top it off with a large chandelier and your round table has made the most of a square room.

Isn’t it Romantic…

Romantic2

I’m working on this bedroom that becomes more romantic with each added element. The centerpiece is the canopy bed finished in antique polished steel, with fabric cascading gracefully to the floor. The aubusson rug is soft and sensual, the gathered sheers on the windows are simple yet elegant, and the alabaster lamps on French night tables add just the right note of classical serenity. It still needs finishing, but a room like this might easily lead to dreams of moonlit nights and long, lingering glances across a crowded room. Or maybe I’m just a hopeless romantic.

A Public Place for a Private Function

BarrPRm

Powder rooms are among the most public rooms in your home. Visitors who might see only your living or dining room will also make the acquaintance of your powder room. So it becomes a very public place for a very private function, a reflection of your taste and style among quite intimate surroundings. I tend to see Powder Rooms as opportunities to display a bolder, edgier look, within the confines of what is usually a confined space. I use more decorative faucets and pedestal sinks, vanities with the bowl resting on stone, interesting wood or mosaic floors, and lighting that is soft but efficient. This powder room in a Tudor home in Summit features an Arts and Crafts theme typified by the striking William Morris wallpaper.

Coco Before Chanel

Coco1

Saw this wonderful film recently with Audrey Tautou. All about Coco Chanel before she became Coco Chanel. I enjoyed the sophisticated treatment of her rise, from orphan to music hall singer to country squire’s mistress to proprietor of a small hat shop in Paris. Tautou is excellent as the independent, driven woman who would later revolutionize the fashion world. The photography is magnificent, the costumes are ravishing, and the lush interiors of French country chateaus gave me several ideas for clients. Not to be missed.

On Fifth Avenue

open source video, online video platform, video solution

Located opposite New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, this spacious pre-war apartment is the second Manhattan dwelling designed by Belle Maison for a sophisticated, culturally active couple. The design grew from the floor coverings; hand woven Nepalese, Hamadan and Ushak rugs were chosen, whose color schemes, patterns and textures led to the furnishing choices. The style is contemporary/traditional, mixing comfortable furniture with antiques, framed by an eclectic collection of art. Here’s a quick video tour.

From Raw Wood to Polished Mahogany

When I work on a project from inception it’s possible to create a design that fits the space flawlessly—like clothing that’s made to measure. In this case, the client wanted a family room/entertainment center that functioned as a home theatre (the screen slides down from the ceiling to cover the windows), a bedroom for the children’s visiting friends (the day beds were made especially to fit under the windows), and a rec room for family gatherings (plenty of comfortable seating areas and game tables.)  By working together from the beginning we were able to create the space to fulfill their needs in every way without compromise.

Of course it helps that I’ve worked with this family for many years and we’ve developed an exceptional rapport. Out of this kind of relationship the best results flow naturally.

Fast Food

Friends tell me that my pace as a chef is very speedy, but I can’t compete with this video.
