Bird’s Eye View of Columbus

If you find yourself near Columbus Circle in Manhattan through Nov. 18 you’ll notice six floors of scaffolding with a windowed box on top hiding the tower and statue of Columbus. He’s still there, housed in a work of art by Tatzu Nishi called Discovering Columbus. The room at the top is a contemporary apartment with the statue positioned as a bold, (extremely) outsize accessory atop a coffee table. It’s very Magritte like, offering the surreal juxtaposition of this towering statue within a make believe apartment complete with flat screen TV and great views of Central Park. I appreciated the unreality of it all, though I was busy creating the perfect interior design scheme for a space with such luxuriously tall ceilings.
