Art (made out of) Books

As a book lover (the old-fashioned kind with spines and smells, texture and heft, words and pictures on a real, touchable page) I’m fascinated by the artwork of Justin Rowe. He uses old, abandoned books, a rotating blade scalpel and, as he puts it “my own sometimes bizarre imagination”, to create sculptures of great charm and originality. He uses the illustrations found in the books themselves, and the wonderful plasticity of the pages make the sculptures come alive. Rowe started by doing window displays at the bookstore in Cambridge, England where he works as a bookseller, and he now exhibits his work and accepts commissions. For the book obsessed I can’t think of a better gift—a not so subtle hint to my husband!
